Department of ophthalmology, University Hospitals Leuven provide high quality medical and paramedical care to ambulatory and hospitalized patients, at campus Gasthuisberg, Lubbeek, Pellenberg, Sint-Pieter and Sint-Rafaël.

Since 07/2010 the University Hospitals Leuven are Joint Commission International ( JCI ) labeled hospitals.

In addition to providing high-quality care, UZ Leuven university hospitals aim above all to guarantee safe care. This is why UZ Leuven closely monitors the international standards in the field of patient safety. These standards focus on a number of aspects:

DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY
As part of the University Hospitals Leuven, the department of ophthalmology is situated at the
Sint – Rafaël and Sint - Pieter Campus. (UZ Leuven Eye Hospital).

The UZ Leuven Eye Hospital Outpatient Clinic has 52.000 patient contacts on a yearly base.
In 2009 5.000 surgical procedures were performed in 3 theatres and recently the expansion with 2 additional theatres was realized.

The ophthalmology department has 2 types of inpatient facilities: the daycare clinic and the inpatient clinic.
The UZ Leuven Eye Hospital is a multidisciplinary eyecare setting.

Approximately 120 employees realize, day in day out, eyecare in a center of excellence.

Besides the main goal for excellent clinical patient care, the UZ Leuven Eye Hospital provides education to residents and students and clinical and basic research in ophthalmology. The department of ophthalmology is EVI ( European Vision Institute) certified
